Punta Nati, Site 12 (Pliocene of Spain)

Where: Balearic Islands, Spain (40.1° N, 3.8° E: paleocoordinates 40.4° N, 3.3° E)

When: Pliocene (5.3 - 2.6 Ma)

• The few evidence availabe points to an age between Upper Miocene and Pleistocene, i.e., most likely, Pliocene (Bailon et al., 2002).

Environment/lithology: karst; poorly lithified, pebbly, quartzose, red, calcareous mudstone

• Punta Nati 12 is characterized through quite thin layers mainly consisting of small bones, with intercalations of red silt containing large bones of a lagomorph.

Size classes: macrofossils, mesofossils

Collection methods: At least the type material of Vipera natiensis is housed in the Institut Miquel-Crusafont, Sabadell, Spain.
