Builstyn Khudag, section BUK-A, layer 12 &14 (Miocene of Mongolia)

Also known as BUK-A/12+14, Valley of Lakes; BUK-A/12+14

Where: Övörkhangai, Mongolia (45.4° N, 101.5° E: paleocoordinates 45.7° N, 101.3° E)

• coordinate stated in text

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: E mammal zone, Loh Formation, Late/Upper Miocene (11.6 - 5.3 Ma)

• Biozone E sensu Höck et al. (1999, Mitt. Österr. Geol. Ges. 90, 83-125)

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: dry floodplain; gray, green, yellow, argillaceous sandstone and red, silty, sandy mudstone

• "The Loh Fm. probably reflects a fluvial system between a 'shallow, gravel-bed river' and a 'shallow, perennial, sand-bed braided river', but with restrictions to a more ephemeral character." Mudstones are interpreted as eolian dust deposits. (Höck et al., 1999)
• "The sediments of the Loh Fm. are dominantely trough cross-bedded, poorly sorted, polymict, matrix-supported gravels and sands. [...] Within the Loh Fm. several layers are of aeolian origin and are associated with caliche horizons, which show the same features as those in the Hsanda Gol sediments. Especially these aeolian deposits are rich in fossils, whereas the fluvial facies is poor in small mammals but contains large mammals." (Höck et al., 1999)

Size classes: macrofossils, mesofossils

Collected by joint Austrian-Mongolian project in 1995-1997, 2001, 2004, 2006; reposited in the NHMW

Collection methods: sieve
