Korpad formation borehole M1 Mecsek Mountains Hungary (Permian of Hungary)

Where: Hungary (46.2° N, 17.9° E: paleocoordinates 7.7° S, 30.8° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• local area-level geographic resolution

When: Korpad Formation, Permian (298.9 - 251.9 Ma)

• This is built up by clastic rocks of predominantly red colour, but green and grey sandstones, too, occur frequently in it. Frequency of burrowing organisms is a characteristic feature of the reddisch brown, siltic, fine grained sandstones which close the cycle.

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: fluvial; bioturbated, gray, green, silty sandstone

• The Korpad sandstone formation rests disconformably on Precambrian granites. On the uneven surface of the Korpad Sandstone formation the Gyurufu Quartzporphyry formation rests with a low angle disconformity.
• This is built up by clastic rocks of predominantly red colour, but green and grey sandstones, too, occur frequently in it. Frequency of burrowing organisms is a characteristic feature of the reddisch brown, siltic, fine grained sandstones which close the cycle.

Taxonomic list

• ref. 6870: The poor macroflora collected from this formation has been determined by G. Andreanszky (1961) as follows: Voltzia heterophylla Brgt., Pecopteris sp.. Presence of Voltzia heterophylla is, however, ambigous as this species is characteristic for the higher beds of the Lower Triassic.
