Little Bear River, MacKenzie Mountains [Mount Cap Fm] (Cambrian of Canada)

Also known as SSF 16.1; Little Bear biota

Where: Northwest Territories, Canada (64.5° N, 126.9° W: paleocoordinates 5.0° S, 69.3° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Mount Cap Formation, Caerfai (538.8 - 509.0 Ma)

• AGE: Early Middle Camrbian age, assignable to either the Albertella to Glossopleura trilobite zone.

•SPECIFIC COMMENTS: occurs within the middle unit of three, within a 10 m succession fo grey shales and minor beds of bioclastic carbonate.

•GENERAL COMMENTS: The Mount Cap Formation can be divided into three loosely defined units: 1) a basal sequence of bioturbated glauconitic sandstones; 2) green/grey shales interbedded with nodula, bioclastic, and laminated carbonates; and 3) an uppermost unit of finely interbedded shale, dolomite and chert/spiculite.

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: offshore; lithified, phosphatic, shelly/skeletal, gray, calcareous shale

• The Little Bear section documents emergent to intermediate depth environments in what is overall a gradually deepening intracratonic basin. The environment of deposition was in quiet water, but well within storm-wave base.
• Fissile grey shale and minor beds of bioclastic carbonate with associated phosphatic crust.

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: soft parts

Collection methods: bulk, chemical, acetic,
