Tin 1 (Jurassic to of Tanzania)

Where: Lindi Region, Tanzania (9.7° S, 39.2° E: paleocoordinates 29.4° S, 16.7° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

When: Tangaru Formation, Middle Oxfordian to Middle Oxfordian (161.2 - 145.0 Ma)

Environment/lithology: terrestrial; lithified, calcareous siltstone and lithified, fine-grained, argillaceous sandstone

• At their type area the Tendaguru Beds form an

•approximately 110 m thick succession of three saurian

•beds with two marine intercalations, the Nerinea Bed

•and the Trigonia smeei Bed above the Lower and

•Middle Saurian Bed, respectively, and a third marine

•unit, the Trigonia schwarzi Bed, overlying the Upper

•Saurian Bed. The saurian beds have been described as

•mainly calcite-cemented siltstones and fine-grained

•sandstones, while the marine intercalations are predominantly

•calcite-cemented, bioclast-rich sandstones

•and silicious–sandy limestones (Heinrich et al. 2001;

•figure 1). Bussert and Aberhan (2004) interpreted

•conglomeratic layers in the Trigonia smeei Bed as

•storm deposits and in a few cases as tsunami deposits.

Size class: microfossils

Preservation: soft parts, original sporopollenin

Collection methods: chemical, hydrochloric, hydroflouric, sieve
