Heilongjiang-Ariadnaesporites (Cretaceous of China)

Where: Heilongjiang, China (48.0° N, 128.0° E: paleocoordinates 49.7° N, 114.8° E)

• coordinate based on political unit

When: Yuliangzi Formation, Maastrichtian (72.1 - 66.0 Ma)

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: mire or swamp; lithology not reported

• Presence of Ariadnaesporites longiprocessum indicates that a kind of lake-swamp habitat existed then. The well-preserved megaspores and microspores with fragile thread-like processes suggest that they were not transported from a distance and thier depositional environment was not strongly stirred up.

Size class: microfossils

Preservation: original sporopollenin

Collection methods: surface (in situ),

Taxonomic list

• Characteristically, these heterospores are the same as those of Ariadnaesporites longiprocessum (Hills et Jensen) Hills from the lower part of the Brazeau Formation of western Alberta, Canada. Both microspores and megaspores are reticulate; the muri of both are formed by the outward folding of the perispores.
