•Tsukiji et al. 2018: Kubota (2005) assigned the age of the Kitadani Formation to the Barremian based on the co-occurrence of charophyte gyrogonites: Clavator harrisii var. reyi, Mesochara harrisi, and Mesoshara stipitata. Recently, Sano (2015) suggested that the co-occurrence of these three species indicates the Barre- mianeAptian age of the Kitadani Formation because these species are also reported elsewhere from the Aptian. Recent interpretation of the stratigraphy of the Kitadani Formation is younger than the thick sandstone dominant unit (Unit B of Sano et al., 2008), which is assigned to the BarremianeAptian Akaiwa Formation (Sano and Yabe, 2016). Thus the Kitadani Formation is likely assigned to the Aptian in age.
