Burnham Limestone - Fleurieu Peninsula (Pleistocene of Australia)

Where: South Australia, Australia (35.3° S, 138.3° E: paleocoordinates 36.6° S, 137.9° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• local area-level geographic resolution

When: Burham Limestone Formation, Early/Lower Pleistocene (2.6 - 0.8 Ma)

• STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: From Burham Limestone, lateral equivalent to the Point Allen Fm. Of limited extent in distribution and deposited on irregular surfaces. The Point Allen Fm and Burnham Limestone rest unconformably on Hallett Cove Sandstone and its equivalents. THICKNESS: From a few centimetres to two metres. AGE: Early Pleistocene based on biostratigraphy and the age of bounding units. STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: From throughout the formation.

• formation-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: estuary or bay; poorly lithified, shelly/skeletal limestone

• ENVIRONMENT: Molluscan fauna typical of intertidal zones of estuaries, tidal inlets, or the sandy or muddy flats of sheltered bays.
• SPECIFIC LITHOLOGY: Soft, powdery carbonate rock, effected by surface calcrete. LITHIFICATION: Poorly lithified based on above comments and figured specimens.

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: cast, mold/impression, original aragonite, original calcite

Collection methods: quarrying,

• COLLECTORS: The list is a composite made by many collectors, mainly Daily (1966), and the author. REPOSITORY: National Museum of Victoria (NMV) and Geological Survey of South Australia (GSSA).
