Core 202170 (Unit F - upper), Arkona Basin, Baltic Sea (Holocene of Denmark)

Also known as Core 202170 (<44cm), Baltic Sea

Where: Denmark (55.0° N, 13.7° E: paleocoordinates 55.0° N, 13.7° E)

• coordinate stated in text

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: Holocene (0.0 - 0.0 Ma)

• Uppermost unit in Arkona Basin sedimentary fill. AMS 14C dates give age at 6,475 years BP. Collection from upper part (<44 cm) of Unit F (lower part = #35074)

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marginal marine; unlithified, fine-grained, argillaceous, silty claystone

• Brackish to fully marine taxa, and some freshwater taxa, present in collection. Unit F was deposted after the Littorina transgression
• Fine-grained clay, silt, and mud, seperated from underlying units by basin-wide traceable sandy layer.

Size class: microfossils

Collection methods: core, chemical, sieve,

• Diatom and macrofossil analysis on material in core 202170 carried out by Professor A Witkowski at the University of Szczecin and Geologic Survey of Denmark and Greenland respectively. Collected during Cruise AvH (10/1996) with 6 m gravity corer, in 46.7 m water depth.
