Hinglaj Group (Pliocene of Pakistan)

Where: Pakistan (25.3° N, 62.1° E: paleocoordinates 24.3° N, 61.4° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• local area-level geographic resolution

When: Hinglaj Group, Pliocene (5.3 - 2.6 Ma)

• STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: From the Hinglaj Group, which unconformably overlies the Parkini Mudstone, and is unconformably overlain by the Haro Conglomerate. THICKNESS: Unknown thickness. AGE: Miocene [Late]-Pliocene, based on faunal affinity. Assigned by the enterer to an intermediate age of Pliocene, from which most macrofossils share affinity. STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: A composite list for the entire group.

• group-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: deltaic; unlithified, ferruginous, brown, gray, yellow, argillaceous, conglomeratic sandstone and poorly lithified, shelly/skeletal, gray, blue limestone

• ENVIRONMENT: Deltaic, according to text.
• SPECIFIC LITHOLOGY: Mainly sandstone, with subordinate conglomerate, clayey shale, and shelly limestone. The sandstone is "salt-and-pepper" protoquartzite that is grey to pale-yellowish brown on fresh surfaces. Most of the sandstone is extremely soft, although many beds have a hard ferruginous crust. The beds are well laminated to massive and are up to 20 ft thick. Cross-bedding is spectacularly abundant, ripple-marks and worm trails are common. Beds of shelly limestone are soft, light colored, and porous, but others are tough-breaking, blue-grey, and dense. They are up to 10 ft thick and weather ferruginous brown. LITHIFICATION: Unlithified, on the basis on facies description.

Size class: macrofossils

Collection methods: COLLECTOR: Not reported in text. REPOSITORY: Not reported in text.
