Guangwei village, Shitangshan section, Wulongqing Fm (Cambrian of China)

Where: Yunnan, China (24.9° N, 102.8° E: paleocoordinates 34.3° N, 159.6° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Palaeolenus trilobite zone, Wulongqing Formation, Botomian (516.0 - 512.9 Ma)

• Stage 4. Canglangpuan.

•Megapalaeolenus Zone (= upper Canglangpuan, Stage 4 of the South Chinese regional biostratigraphical zonation)

• member-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: shallow subtidal; lithified mudstone and siltstone

• The Wulongqing Formation is about 60 m thick and overlies the fine-grained sandstones of the Hongjingshao Formation (Fig. 2). The contact to the underlying unfossiliferous Hongjingshao Formation is characterized by a several-decimetre-thick basal conglomerate of the lowermost part of the Wulongqing Formation, probably indicating a regional transgression event in SW China.
• Monotonous sequence of mudstones with siltstone intercalations, the lower part of which is mainly composed of mudstone with few thin-bedded silt-sandstone layers. The micaceous siltstone and fine-grained sandstone beds become more abundant towards the top of the Wulongqing Formation. The mudstone beds display erosive bases and an upward fining. Multiple-graded silt-mud couplets are frequent within the mudstone beds. Sole marks, trace fossils and microbial mat structures are common at the base of the siltstone beds.
