San Salvador, shallow subtidal facies (Pleistocene of Bahamas)

Where: San Salvador, Bahamas (24.0° N, 74.6° W: paleocoordinates 23.9° N, 74.5° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Late/Upper Pleistocene (0.1 - 0.0 Ma)

Environment/lithology: shallow subtidal; grainstone

• 0.8 m of non-stratified, bioturbated grainstones lies gradationally above the reef-cap facies and gradationally above the deeper subtidal facies in the area directly northeast of the reef (Figs. 2 and 3). The reefward portion of this facies comprises 0.35 m of very well-cemented coarse-grained shelly grainstone/packstone that is welded firmly to the reef-cap facies and forms a pronounced ledge at its eroded limit. Bivalve, gastropod, and coral fragments are common throughout. The landward portion of this facies comprises 0.46 m of moderately cemented, somewhat friable and less resistant rock that is overlain gradationally by laminated rock of beach origin. All rocks of the shallow subtidal facies are extensively burrowed

Size classes: macrofossils, mesofossils, microfossils
