When: Mokattam Formation, Lutetian (47.8 - 41.3 Ma)

• The unit has been assigned a upper Lutetian age in addition to an upper Middle Eocene-lower Upper Eocene age. It has a thickness of 133 m (4367 ft) at the type section near the Citadel, Cairo. The Mokattam Formartion at the type locality consists of three members. Collection is from the middle member (Cairo Buildingstone horizon). It has a thickness of 33 m or 108 ft). A bed is crowded with Nummulites at its top. This unit is equivalent to the Observatory Member in Helwan.

Environment/lithology: lagoonal or restricted shallow subtidal; gypsiferous, white limestone

• Mokattam section represents outer lagoon/back-reef, inner lagoon, and shoal deposits (Tawfik et al., 2016).
