Where: Okinawa, Japan (26.1° N, 127.8° E: paleocoordinates 26.3° N, 127.5° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Shinzato Formation (Shimajiri Group), Gelasian (2.6 - 1.8 Ma)

• Shinzato member (now formation) spans calcareous nannoplankton zones CN12b just to the base of CN13, and planktonic foram zones PL5 and PL6 (UjiiĆ©, 1994), indicating a Gelasian age.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: deep-water; poorly lithified, tuffaceous, gray, silty, sandy claystone

• Molluscs found in assemblages of the Shinzato Tuff Member occur in depths as much as 300 m, although some can be in shallower water. Generally the assemblage should be regarded as deep-water.
• Consists for the most part of sandy or silty clays with minor partings of ash. Its color ranges from dark gray to light gray. Poorly lithified based on fossil preservation.
