Unit 9 (Hamri Stage), Oued Ain Aissa, Algeria - Anderson (1936) (Pliocene of Algeria)

Where: Relizane, Algeria (35.6° N, 0.9° E: paleocoordinates 35.6° N, 0.8° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Hamri Formation, Late/Upper Pliocene (3.6 - 2.6 Ma)

• The collection is from unit 9, a sandstone, 7 m thick, in the middle of the section, about 90 m above the base, 180 m below the top of the section. The Mellah Stage of the Tellian Group is overlain by a thick marine formation composed of mostly dense argillaceous marl. The stage is thought to represent a considerable portion of the lower Pliocene. Its basal member is composed of conglomerate, which is then overlain by marl. The stage reaches up to 600 m in thickness. The Hamri Stage is a upper member of the Pliocene strata and underlies an unconformity with the Pleistocene Chylimath Stage and conformably overlies the Slama stage.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marginal marine; lithified, coarse-grained, pebbly sandstone

• Assemblage suggests "brakish-water"
• Hard zone of coarse, pebbly sandstone, with soft and finer sand and sandstone and thin beds of silty clay.

Size class: macrofossils

Collection methods: Unknown collector, probably the author.
