Stratigraphy
Formation: | Tepetate | ||||
Local section: | Punta Colnett
Regional section: | Baja California Su
Stratigraphic resolution: | bed
Stratigraphy comments: Collected from the upper of two horizons. Paleocene and Eocene series are named the Tepetate Formation in Baja California. The strata probably underlie a large part of the region covered by latter rocks, the uppermost beds lapping over the edges of the older formations and lying on the granite of the main range. Determined to be middle Eocene (upper Martinez faunal similarities) by Gardner. |
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology: | fine,yellow siltstone |
Secondary lithology: | "cross stratification" sandstone |
Includes fossils? | Y |
Includes fossils? | Y |
Lithology description: In many places it is composed largely of fine yellow silt and contains sandstone beds with mammoth cross-bedding.
Environment: | deltaic indet. |
Geology comments: The formation shows strong evidence of being a delta and near-shore deposit. |
