Geography
Country:United States State/province:California County:San Bernardino
Coordinates: 35.0° North, 116.8° West (view map)
Paleocoordinates:34.1° North, 111.3° West
Basis of coordinate:estimated from map
Geographic resolution:small collection
Time
Period:Neogene Epoch:Miocene
Stage:Burdigalian 10 m.y. bin:Cenozoic 5
Key time interval:Hemingfordian
Age range of interval:18.50000 - 16.30000 m.y. ago
Stratigraphy
Formation:Barstow Member:Upper
Stratigraphic resolution:group of beds
Stratigraphy comments: Overlying fine-grained lacustrine beds (here referred to as the Calico Member of the Barstow Formation) are bracketed between ca. 19 and 16.9 Ma, and are thus older than the type section of the Barstow Formation in the Mud Hills. Several 17.1-16.8 Ma calc-alkaline dacite domes intrude the Calico Member.
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology:planar lamination,concretionary lithified mudstone
Lithology description: "microlaminated mudstones" including the fossiliferous concretions
Environment:lacustrine - large Tectonic setting:rift
Geology comments: "lake sediments" indicating an environment analogous to that seen in Mono Lake, Big Soda Lake, and Soap Lake
Taphonomy
Modes of preservation:body,adpression,concretion
Lagersttten type:conservation
Size of fossils:mesofossils
Collection methods and comments
Collection methods:bulk,chemical,acetic,field collection
Reason for describing collection:paleoecologic analysis
Collection method comments: "Over 1000 concretions were collected and etched in a 10% acetic acid bath... residues were examined to identify and assess the relative anatomic preservation of fossils"
