Stratigraphy
Formation:Meisenheim Member:Jeckenbach
Stratigraphy comments: Lower Rotliegendes, Jeckenbach-Schichten, L-O5.
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology: lithified "siliciclastic"
Environment:lacustrine - large Tectonic setting:rift
Geology comments: Saar-Nahe basin; Half-graben generated by extension on South Hunsruck bounding fault, but with some component of dextral strike-slip transtension in an intermontane setting following the Variscan orogeny. "They [Niedermoschel beds] represent the profundal facies of a large lake and yield an aquatic fauna…The abundance of terrestrial plants and insects has been attributed to a strong deltaic input" (Poschmann & Schindler 1997).
Taphonomy
Modes of preservation:mold/impression,adpression
Size of fossils:macrofossils
Collection methods and comments
Reason for describing collection:taxonomic analysis
Collection method comments: Repository: Palaeontological Museum Nierstein; Landesamt fur Denkmalpflege Rheinland-Pfalz; Naturhistorisches Museum Mainz, Landessammlung fur Naturkunde Rheinland-Pfalz
Taxonomic list comments:"Vertebrates and crustaceans , such as ostracodes, conchostracans and syncarids"(Bethoux & Poschmann 2009). "Insects are usually preserved as paired or isolated wings, or fragments thereof. Completely preserved large wings (>2 cm) are rare. Animals with body and wings preserved are rare exceptions, and the number of such fossils decreases with increasing size" (Hornschemeyer 1998).
