Stratigraphy
Formation: | Croudace Bay | Member: | Belmont Conglomerate
Stratigraphic resolution: | bed
Stratigraphy comments: Insect bed is 30 cm thick, but insects concentrated approximately 2 cm below top. From horizon 70 feet below base of Fassifern Coal, according to Knight (1950). Fassifern coal dated at 253.38 +/- 0.08 Ma and the underlying Upper Pilot A seam at 253.55 +/- 0.06 Ma by Metcalf et al. (2015). |
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology: | fine, tuffaceous, gray lithified chert
Environment: | pond | Tectonic setting: | foreland basin |
Geology comments: Insect bed appears to have been deposited in shallow ephemeral floodbasin ponds and is stratigraphically positioned between fast-flowing river and coal swamp deposits. Volcanic ash draped the area, infilling the pools and preserving the taphocoenosis. Switch to contractional deformation in Hunter-Bowen orogeny occurred c. 265 Ma; Sydney basin transitioned into foreland basin. |
