Geography
Country:Belgium State/province:Hainaut
Coordinates: 50.4° North, 3.8° East (view map)
Paleocoordinates:43.8° North, 2.1° East
Basis of coordinate:estimated from map
Geographic resolution:outcrop
Time
Period:Paleogene Epoch:Paleocene
Stage:Danian 10 m.y. bin:Cenozoic 1
Key time interval:Danian
Age range of interval:66.00000 - 61.60000 m.y. ago
Stratigraphy
Formation:Hainin
Stratigraphic resolution:group of beds
Stratigraphy comments: Reference-level MP1-5 of the mammalian biochronological scale for the European Palaeogene.

Although not precisely dated, has been correlated with the earliest Selandian based on stratigraphy (Steurbaut 1998), and more recently to the latest Danian (Steurbaut & Sztrakos 2008).

The borehole that yielded the fossils encountered continental deposits between 8.50 m and 38.52 m in depth. Of the 30 m of continental deposits, only the section between 11 and 25 m yielded vertebrates (De Bast and Smith 2016).
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology: claystone
Includes fossils?Y
Environment:lacustrine indet.
Taphonomy
Modes of preservation:body
Size of fossils:macrofossils,mesofossils
Collection methods and comments
Collection methods:core,chemical
Reason for describing collection:taxonomic analysis
Collectors:Geological laboratory of the Faculté Polytechnique de Mons Collection dates:Early 1970s
Collection method comments: The sediments collected from the Hainin well went through a first step of screen washing. The remaining hard parts were treated with formic acid (5%) with tricalcic phosphate (Ca3(PO4)2) used as a buffer. A second step of screenwashing was then performed.
