Stratigraphy
Formation:Commentry Shales
Stratigraphic resolution:group of beds
Stratigraphy comments: Stephanian
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology:very fine lithified mudstone
Lithology description: "The rock in which the insects occur is a very fine grained mudstone, which may well have accumulated by the deposition of fine sediment in enclosed or lake-like waters." Bolton, 1917
Environment:lacustrine deltaic indet. Tectonic setting:pull-apart basin
Geology comments: Fossiliferous layers are of fresh water origin and are allochthonous, apparently deposited by streams in delta-like, detritic sediments along the shore of a lake. Dextral strike-slip transtension in an intermontane setting following the Variscan orogeny.
Taphonomy
Modes of preservation:mold/impression
Size of fossils:macrofossils
Collection methods and comments
Collection methods:survey of museum collection
Reason for describing collection:taxonomic analysis
Collectors:Henri Fayol
Collection method comments: Collected by Fayol (mining engineer and later director at Compagnie de Commentry-Fourchambeau-Decazeville) collected during his early study on the stratigraphy and sediments of the Commentry coal basin.
