Stratigraphy
Formation:Gonia Member:Silata
Stratigraphy comments: Based on biochronology, the age of the locality is on the boundary of Miocene/Pliocene
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology: silty claystone
Secondary lithology: muddy siltstone
Includes fossils?Y
Includes fossils?Y
Lithology description: The micromammals come from bed 2 (silts-clays) and bed 3 (clayey-marly sands)
Environment:fluvial-lacustrine indet.
Geology comments: The ecological adaptation of each taxon, the composition of the fauna, the lithology of the fossiliferous beds, the presence of the non-micromammalian fossils and the lignite elements suggest an open and dry environment, with water spots (lakes, swamps, springs) in the wider area.
Taphonomy
Modes of preservation:body
Size of fossils:macrofossils,mesofossils,microfossils
Collection methods and comments
Collection excludes:some macrofossils
Collection methods:surface (in situ),sieve, field collection, survey of museum collection, observed (not collected)
Collection size:500 specimens
Reason for describing collection:taxonomic analysis
Collectors:G. E. Syrides; K. V. Vasileiadou Collection dates:1980-
Collection method comments: During the 1980s, one of the authors (G.S.), working for his thesis in the area, found a level with micromammals near the village of Nea Silata (Fig. 1). At that time, he collected a poor sample and the fauna initially determined by Aguilar suggested an early Ruscinian age for the corresponding deposits (Syrides 1990).
