Missouri River between Cheyenne River and Cheyenne Agency (Cretaceous of the United States)

Where: South Dakota (44.9° N, 100.4° W: paleocoordinates 50.6° N, 73.6° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• local area-level geographic resolution

When: Pierre Shale Formation (Montana Group), Maastrichtian (72.1 - 66.0 Ma)

• "Very top of Pierre Shale and just below Fox Hills sandstone" [This seems unlikely, at least if the geographic description is accurate, because the Fox Hills is exposed more than 25 km to the west. If it really is the uppermost Pierre Shale, it should be early Late Maastrichtian in age.]

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; lithified shale

Size class: macrofossils
