Wet Cave (Pleistocene to of Australia)

Also known as Tomato-Stick Cave, 5U10, 5U11; Naracoorte Caves World Heritage Area

Where: South Australia, Australia (37.0° S, 140.8° E: paleocoordinates 37.0° S, 140.8° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: Late/Upper Pleistocene to Late/Upper Pleistocene (0.1 - 0.0 Ma)

Environment/lithology: cave; poorly lithified, silty, sandy siliciclastic sediments

• karstic cave in Oligocene to Miocene limestones; for further details see Forbes & Bestland (2007, p. 371-373)
• The statement of Reed & Bourne (2000) that the excavation was carried out “[...] in the distal fan sediments of a large sediment cone” suggests that the fossils originate from a rather fine grained matrix, i.e. similar to that of other fossiliferous deposits of the Naracoorte area caves. Indeed, Forbes & Bestland (2007, p. 373) describe the sedimentary succession as “red silts overlain by yellow sands that are, in turn, capped by darker, organic-rich silts and sands. [...] Various clasts of weathered limestone, calcrete, charcoal, and bone are found throughout the three deposits [...]”.

Size class: macrofossils

Collected by Flinders University in 1997-1998
