VF Unnumbered (Miocene of Peru)

Also known as Inuya River

Where: Ucayali, Peru (11.0° S, 72.7° W: paleocoordinates 11.3° S, 70.9° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

• local area-level geographic resolution

When: Acre Conglomerate Member (Madre de Dios Formation), Late/Upper Miocene (11.6 - 5.3 Ma)

• Although no stratigraphic data are available for these localities, the fact that sites VF2, VF3, and VF56 were collected in November and January (as per specimen labels; Willard, 1966), during the rainy season in that part of Amazonia, precludes the possibility that the fossils came from riverine lag deposits exposed only during the dry season. The fossils collected on these dates were probably taken directly from the fossiliferous Acre Conglomerate (see below; Campbell et al., 1985, 2006), upon which riverine beaches often form at high water levels.

• member-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: fluvial; lithified, black conglomerate

Size class: macrofossils
