Farm Swartpunt, Urusis Formation (Cambrian of Namibia)

Where: Namibia (27.5° S, 16.7° E: paleocoordinates 40.6° S, 151.2° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: Spitzkopf Member (Urusis Formation), Nemakit-Daldynian (541.0 - 530.0 Ma)

• The trace fossil would suggest a Cambrian age for the upper part of the Spitskop

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: shallow subtidal; lithified sandstone and lithified limestone

• The trace fossils were recovered from the upper part of the Spitskop Member of the Urusis Formation, at about 795 metres in medium-scale sequence 18 of Saylor. The trace occurs a few metres above limestones containing tubular fossils (B. Z. Saylor, pers. comm.), and about 20 to 30 metres above the occurrence of the Ediacara-type fossils Swartpuntia germsi and Pteridinium carolinaense(Narbonne, Saylor & Grotzinger, 1997).
• Thin-bedded sandstones are bracketed by thinbedded limestone, representing deposition on the midshelf.

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: trace
