Zohar 1 Well, Core 7 (Cretaceous to of Israel)

Where: Negev, Israel (31.6° N, 34.7° E: paleocoordinates 7.3° N, 30.3° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

When: Zeweira Formation (Kurnub Group), Barremian to Barremian (129.4 - 113.0 Ma)

Environment/lithology: shallow subtidal; lithified sandstone

• Since the Late Jurassic, the Middle East has been under the influence of a tensional tectonic regime that resulted in normal faulting throughout the region (Freund et al., 1975). During the Jurassic and Cretaceous a depositional axis developed roughly parallel to the Israeli shoreline (Bein and Gvirztman, 1977; Gvirtzman and Klang, 1972). This "hingeline" formed the boundary between two types of marine environments. The area to the southeast of this boundary was a shallow, shelf environment in which clay and sand were deposited. To the northwest of the hingeline a deep water, slope-type environment existed, in which the percentage of marine carbonates and clays become more abundant.
