El Cajón Valley (Neogene of Argentina)

Also known as Puesto El Molle - Molle Grande

Where: Catamarca, Argentina (26.6° S, 66.3° W: paleocoordinates 26.9° S, 64.3° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

• local area-level geographic resolution

When: El Morterito Formation, Huayquerian (8.0 - 5.0 Ma)

• The fossiliferous beds correspond to the El Morterito Formation (Turner, 1973), sequence II of the Playa del Zorro ‘‘alloformation’’ (Bossi et al., 1992, 1993; Esteban and Nasif, 1996). The upper part of this sequence (IIb and IIc subsequences) is correlated with the Andalhuala Formation in the Santa Mar ́ıa Valley, Catamarca Province (Bossi et al., 1993).

• formation-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: "floodplain"; lithified, fine-grained sandstone and lithified, paleosol/pedogenic, green siltstone

• These sediments were deposited in a floodplain environment with occasional flash floods, which was rapidly colonized by vegetation.
• thinly-bedded, fine-grained sandstones interbedded with dark greenish siltstones. Interbedded paleosols commonly host calcareous concretions and rhyzoconcretions.

Size class: macrofossils
