• The island appears to be composed entirely of coral rock, and has evidently continued to rise, probably in stages, for traces of at least five distinct flat reefs can he seen in the cliffs. There are two main lines of depressions in the surface of the coral rock, approximately at right-angles to one another, and it is in these depressions that the guano (containing the Meiolania bones) is found.
