When: Stimulograptus sedgwickii graptolite zone, Pontedo Shales Member (Formigoso Formation), Aeronian (440.8 - 438.5 Ma)
• basalmost Stimulograptus sedgwickii Zone. Although Aramburu (1989) originally placed the fossiliferous shales towards the upper part of his ‘‘Getino Beds’’ – interpreted by him as a ‘‘condensed’’ sucession from Middle Ordovician to Early Silurian strata –, Aramburu and Garcı´a-Ramos (1993) separated these from the preceding unit, naming it the ‘‘Pontedo Shales’’. According to these authors, the latter are a local and lateral correlative of the uppermost ‘‘Getino Beds’’. A different stratigraphic view was presented by Berna´rdez et al. (2006), who placed the highly fossiliferous ‘‘Pontedo beds’’ as bracketed by the glauconitic sandstone that constitutes the base of the Formigoso Fm. at a regional level, and the black graptolitic shales of the remaining part of the same unit. The Formigoso Fm. in the Pontedo section rests unconformably on the Late Ordovician (Hirnantian) diamictites of the Pontedo paleovalley (Berna´rdez et al., 2006; Gutie´ rrez-Marco et al., 2010).
