G1637, Punta Lazzi, Capo Milazzo (Pleistocene of Italy)

Where: Italy (38.3° N, 15.2° E: paleocoordinates 38.2° N, 15.2° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Gelasian (2.6 - 1.8 Ma)

• 2.5 m above base. Said to be late Pliocene (but before reassignment of Gelasian to the Pleistocene). Gaetani & Sacca identify foraminifera of zone MPL 4 at 3-3.5 m above the base, which would be mid-Pliocene. However, they also identify planktonic foraminifera of that zone at the Punta Mazza section, which is dated as Gelasian (upper MPL 5 and 6) to Calabrian in more recent papers. According to Borghi et al., this 8 meter thick marl unit belongs to MPL 5 and 6.

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: basinal (); lithified, yellow marl

• Bathyal marls infilling hollows in older (late Miocene) sediments.
• Lithified based on outcrop photo in Borghi et al. (2014).
