Galon-Graben (Eocene to of Germany)

Also known as Galongraben, Schönecker Fischschiefer des Galon-Grabens, Galon Graben

Where: Bavaria, Germany (47.8° N, 12.7° E: paleocoordinates 44.6° N, 11.0° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

When: Schöneck Formation, Priabonian to Priabonian (38.0 - 28.1 Ma)

• "Unteroligozän, Latdorf, NP 21" (lower Oligocene, Latdorfian) - NP21 spans the very late Eocene and early Oligocene but Latdorfian is currently counted as part of the Rupelian. There seem to be multiple horizons of the Schönecker fish shales, which seems to lead to confusion in age of the overall locality in the literature.

Environment/lithology: marine; shale

• "As a result of the processing, there is a nectonic fish fauna in which benthic and litoral elements are completely absent. From the prevalence of mesopelagic fish, a minimum water depth of 400 m can be assumed." - Pfeil 1981

Size class: macrofossils
