Zillerleite, south of Traunstein (Miocene of Germany)

Where: Germany (47.9° N, 12.6° E: paleocoordinates 46.7° N, 11.9° E)

• coordinate stated in text

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Aquitanian (23.0 - 20.4 Ma)

• Based on nanno-plankton, Martini (1981) considered that the fish shales of Zillerleite (Traunstein) correspond to the zone NN1, matching with Wenger (1985, 1987) who dated these strata as Upper Egerian (corresponding to Aquitanian in terms of international chronostratigraphy).

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: deep-water; lithified shale

• Due to the presence of myctophid fishes (with luminescent organs) and the micropalaeontological results (Weng, 1985, 1987), a deep-water environment with decreasing depth towards the transition to the succeeding Eggenburgian sediments can be expected.

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: adpression

Reposited in the BSP
