Also known as Valle de la Romma

Where: Lombardia, Italy (45.8° N, 9.9° E: paleocoordinates 45.8° N, 9.9° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

When: Leffe Formation, Calabrian (1.8 - 0.8 Ma)

• Biogenic (lignite-bearing) unit of the Leffe Formation characterized by reversed polarity. The biogenic phase of the Leffe sequence belongs to the Matuyama paleomagnetic epoch, between two normal events: Olduvai (top at 1.8 Ma according to Hilgen, 1991) and Jaramillo (base at 1.07 Ma according to Shackleton et al., 1990) (Ravazzi et al., 1992). Some further biostratigraphic information is provided by the mammal fauna. Evolved forms of Elephas meridionalis (E. meridionalis vestinus) were found over the top of the biogenic unit (Vialli, 1956), whereas its middle part includes only typical forms. These forms have recently been re-assigned to the uppermost Villafranchian, dated at about 1-1.2 Ma (Azzaroli et al., 1988; Gibbard et al., 1991; Masini et al., 1994).
