Bed 8db - Gebel Gharra section, Suez (Miocene of Egypt)

Where: Egypt (36.2° N, 32.3° E: paleocoordinates 36.3° N, 32.4° E)

• coordinate stated in text

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Burdigalian (20.4 - 16.0 Ma)

• STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: No lithostratigraphic unit named in text. Due to rapid lateral facies changes lithostratigraphic classification is widely unclear and controversial (Abdelghany and Piller 1999). AGE: Burdigalian, as indicated by foraminiferal biostratigraphy - Miogypsina = M2-M4 following Berggren et al. 1995, and NH4 after martinin 1971; upper part of SB 25 after Cahuzac and Poignant 1997. THICKNESS: From individual bed (<1 m) within 140 m thick section.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: coastal; poorly lithified, shelly/skeletal, calcareous sandstone

• LTHOLOGY: Sandstone with skeletal material. LITHIFICATION: Poorly lithified, based on figured specimens (loose from matrix but with sediment adhered, others articulated).

Size class: macrofossils

Collection methods: bulk,

• COLLECTORS: Mandic and Piller, aided by Abdelghany and Ismail and others. REPOSITORY: Natural History Musem, Vienna.
