Messadit section (Unit 3), Morocco (Miocene of Morocco)

Also known as Messadit section (upper), Morocco

Where: Morocco (35.3° N, 3.0° W: paleocoordinates 35.2° N, 3.2° W)

• coordinate stated in text

• local area-level geographic resolution

When: Messinian (7.2 - 5.3 Ma)

• Data a composite of sampled horizons with upper unit of sequence, unit 3 in text. Unit 2 is a "a prograding Porites reef complex, including Halimeda-rich slope deposits which extend far basinward". No formal lithostratigraphic names used in text. Dated tuffs within unit yielded an age of 6.54+/- 0.04 and 6.46 +/- 0.03 Ma.

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: slope; diatomaceous, brown, argillaceous marl

• "The Melilla-Nador basin is one of the post nappe basins of the Rif region created during sun-Tortonian extensional period. Late Tortonian and Messinian deposits are widely transgressive over the tectonized bvasiment and lower part of the Messinian deposits is characterized by southward prograding shallow water bioclastic then reefal complexes, changing to open marine marls and diatomites
• Upper unit comprises marls, marl-diatomite alternations, and volcanic tuffs.

Size class: microfossils
