Naseby GS 494 (Oligocene of New Zealand)

Also known as NZGS coll. 494

Where: Central Otago, New Zealand (45.0° S, 170.3° E: paleocoordinates 51.2° S, 175.3° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

• local area-level geographic resolution

When: Naseby Greensand Formation (Stranraer Group), Late/Upper Oligocene (28.4 - 23.0 Ma)

• Originally listed as "Hutchinson's Quarry beds". Described in text as from units of the Naseby Series (now Naseby Greensand), part of the Pareora Formation of Hutton (1875). From Bishop (1979): Naseby Greensand (Stranraer Group) is approximatey 250-300 m thick, underlain by metamorphosed schist or siltstone of the Eocene Swinburn Formation (Stranraer Group), and overlain conformably by current-bedded quartz sands and gravels of the late Oligocene/early Miocene Wedderburn Formation (Stranraer Group).

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; poorly lithified, coarse-grained, green sandstone

• From Bishop (1979) "....part of marine-terrestrial transgressive-regressive sequence of the Stranraer Group in the Maniototo basin"; "marine wedge thins rapidly westward,"
• No lithologic description given in text. From Bishop (1975): The greensand is a coarse and quartzose, with common bands, nodules and patches of limnoite,, and with thin lensoid beds of angular quartz pebbles.....Macrofossils are numerous.
