Calcari di Melissano fish (Cretaceous of Italy)

Also known as Calcari di Melissano layers 3 and 5

Where: Italy (40.1° N, 8.5° E: paleocoordinates 33.6° N, 5.8° E)

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Calcari di Melissano Formation, Campanian (83.6 - 72.1 Ma)

• latest Campanian, two layers grouped here, one about 25 cm thick, and situated about 10 cm below the upper layer which is about 50 cm thick.

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: shelly/skeletal, argillaceous limestone

• a limestone layer with laminae and rare well, preserved fishes some of the limestone has an "earthy" appearance with frequent fragments of ichthyolites

Size class: macrofossils

Collection methods: For all layers excavated, rock was dug to a depth of about 90 cm, on an excavation front of 5 m.
