Torrente Meduna sample 11 (Miocene of Italy)

Also known as Venus-Conus community sample 11

Where: Pordenone, Italy (46.2° N, 12.8° E: paleocoordinates 45.6° N, 12.4° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: San Martino Calcarenite Formation, Langhian (16.0 - 13.8 Ma)

• Miocene Torento-Meduna sequence unconformably overlies the Eocene Clauzetto Flysch (Flysch di Clauzetto) and is composed of Preplans Sandstone, Zouf marl, Rugo Mizza Sandstone, San Martino Calcarenite, Torrente Meduna Siltstone, Maraldi Sandstone, Bier Puddingstone, and Montello Conglomerate. Thickness of the San Martino Calcarenite is approximately 170 m. Sample 11 is from the uppermost part of the San Martino Calcarenite.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: offshore; medium-grained, coarse, micaceous, brown, gray sandstone

• "Rich foraminiferal assemblages suggest a Langhian age".
• San Martino Calcarenite "consists of medium to coarse-grained, brown-gtrey, micaceous sandstone".

Size class: macrofossils

Collection methods: bulk,

• Based on single bulk samples, about 30 cubic centimetres each. Grain size data also provided.
