USGS M1690, Point Año Nuevo (Pleistocene of the United States)

Where: San Mateo County, California (37.1° N, 122.3° W: paleocoordinates 37.1° N, 122.3° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Late/Upper Pleistocene (0.1 - 0.0 Ma)

• From exposure of terrace deposit. The wave-cut platform is directly overlain by a stratum of fossiliferous sand and sandy gravel that reaches a maximum thickness of 2-3 feet. The fossiliferous stratum is overlain, locally, by light-gray to tan fine sand. Cut into massive siltstone (Monterey Fm).

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: coastal; unlithified, pebbly, shelly/skeletal sandstone

• A Pleistocene terrace shellbed, hence transgressive.
• Fossiliferous sand and sandy gravel.

Size class: macrofossils

Reposited in the UCMP, USNM

Collection methods: bulk, quarrying, sieve,

• Figured material at USNM; unfigured specimens formerly at USGS Menlo Park (now UCMP)
