USGS M1691, Santa Cruz (Pleistocene of the United States)

Where: Santa Cruz County, California (37.0° N, 122.0° W: paleocoordinates 37.0° N, 122.0° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Late/Upper Pleistocene (0.1 - 0.0 Ma)

• From Pleistocene marine terrace. Terrace is exposed about 15 ft above sea level. It is cut into fossiliferous sandstone of the Pliocene Purisima Formation. Radiocardbon dates from bivalve shells in this area yielded dates older than 39,000 years

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: coastal; poorly lithified sandstone

• A Pleistocene terrace shellbed, hence transgressive.
• Original sand deposits are preserved at locality M1691 as pockets underneath and between large, rather flat boulders of calcareous sandstone - probably concretions weathering out of the underlying Purism Formation.

Size class: macrofossils

Reposited in the UCMP, USNM

Collection methods: bulk, quarrying, sieve,

• Figured specimens at USNM, unfigured specimens likely at UCMP (transferred from USGS Menlo Park).
