Pilton Formation Gastropods (Devonian of the United Kingdom)

Where: England, United Kingdom (51.1° N, 4.1° W: paleocoordinates 20.0° S, 1.1° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• local area-level geographic resolution

When: Pilton Formation, Famennian (372.2 - 358.9 Ma)

• Latest Devonian. Overlies Baggy Formation.

• formation-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; sandstone and shale

• "The 'Pilton Shales' of the 'Pilton Formation' consist of alternating thin-bedded fine-grained sandstones, siltstones, and silty shales. Carbonate layers and lenses occur at several horizons...rapid facies changes, lateral thinning and the disappearance of beds, varying thickness and changing fossil content characterize the sequence."
