• interpreted as shallow-marine sediments, representing alternating periods of quieter water and more active deposition
• "The Lynton Slates comprise grey and dark grey silty slates with mudstones, siltstones and grey sandstones, usually fine to medium grained...In general the lower part...is sandy or silty, but with significant argilllites, and the upper part is predominantly argillaceous except at the top, where sandstones, possibly beach deposits, herald the transition into the overlying Hangman Grits..."
