Placenticeratidae was named by Hyatt (1900) [m. kosnik taxon no: 5228].

It was assigned to Ammonoidea by Howarth (1985); to Hoplitaceaea by Kennedy et al. (1992); to Hoplitaceae by Wright (1952), Förster (1975), Wiedmann (1978), Summesberger (1979), Kennedy (1984), Matsumoto (1984), Klinger and Kennedy (1989), Kennedy and Cobban (1991), Cobban and Kennedy (1992), Kennedy and Cobban (1993), Kennedy (1995), Kennedy et al. Hypengonoceratidae was named by Chiplonkar and Ghare (1976).

It was synonymized subjectively with Placenticeratidae by Kennedy and Cobban (1991).

It was considered an invalid subgroup of Placenticeratidae by Kennedy and Cobban (1991).
