Pododesmus burnsi was named by Mansfield (1939) [TYPE LOCALITY: Station# 3300, Shell Creek, Florida; Pliocene.]. Its type specimen is USNM 164569, a shell, and it is not a trace fossil. It is the type species of Placunanomia (Tamianomia).
It was recombined as Placunanomia (Tamianomia) burnsi by Olsson (1967).
