Notoemys laticentralis

Reptilia - Testudines

Taxonomy
Notoemys laticentralis was named by Cattoi and Freiberg (1961). Its type specimen is MACN 18043, a partial shell (carapace and anterior plastral lobe), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Las Lajas (MACN), which is in a Tithonian terrestrial horizon in the Vaca Muerta Formation of Argentina.

Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
M. Fernandez and M. S. de la Fuente 1994Jurassic Pleurodire with primitive features: foramen posterius caratoci interni completely formed by the basisphenoid; cervical vertebrae amphicoelous; carapace with continuous series of odd plates made up of a nuchal plate, eight irregular shaped neural plates, two suprapygal and one pygal plate; cervical scute and five vertebral scutes considerably greater in width than length; axilar and inguinal pillars attached to the visceral surface of the peripheric plates and the lateral end of the pleural plates; lateral cuneiform mesoplastra not in contact at the midline. Derived characters are: basicranium characterized by a quadrate with a medial processus that extends medially contacting the basisphenoid and completely covering the prootic; carapace strongly depressed; no supramarginal scutes; first pair of thoracic ribs reduced; iliac scar does not reach the peripherical plates, plastron with an elongated central fenestra.
E. Cadena and W. G. Joyce 2015Notoemys laticentralis can be diagnosed as a panpleurodire, platychelyid and representative of Notoemys by the full list of apomorphies listed above:
Notoemys is currently differentiated from P. oberndorferi by plesiomorphically having a relatively smooth and flattened carapace and suprapygal elements, by lacking supramarginals and by apomorphically exhibiting neurals that are consistently wider than long and an iliac scar that is restricted to costal VIII.

Notoemys laticentralis is currently differentiated from other Notoemys by an anteriorly constricted neural I that is in broad contact with costal II, posteriorly wider suprapygal I, vertebral scutes that are almost twice as wide as long, a well-developed posterolateral contact of marginal I with pleural I, and a large central plastral fontanelle that partially separates the xiphiplastral from one another. The skull of N. laticentralis can be distinguished from crown pleurodires by the ventrally widened prootic that contacts the area articularis quadrati, the flattened, shortened and posteriorly rounded paroccipital process, thickened medial portion of columella, ventral exposure of the stapedial canal and a posteriorly open recessus scalae tympani.
