Nephila was named by Leach (1815). It is extant. It is the type genus of Nephilinae.
It was assigned to Nephilidae by Dunlop et al. (2013); to Nephilidae by Kuntner et al. (2018); and to Nephilinae by Petrunkevitch (1922), Wheeler et al. (2017) and Patel et al. (2019).
