Elaschitotherium was named by Metais et al. (2004) [At one point in the paper, this genus is spelled Elaschistotherium.]. Its type is Elaschitotherium qii.

It was assigned to Lantianiinae by Metais et al. (2004) and Theodor et al. (2007).
