Columbites morpheos was named by Popov (1961). It is the type species of Tompoites.
It was recombined as Tirolites morpheos by Kummel (1969); it was recombined as Tompoites morpheos by Ermakova (1977); it was recombined as Tompophiceras morpheos by Bychkov et al. (1976) and Dagis et al. (1996).
