Triplagnostus was named by Howell (1935) [Sepkoski's age data: ]. It is not extant.

It was reranked as Ptychagnostus (Triplagnostus) by Westergård (1946); it was synonymized subjectively with Ptychagnostus by Jell and Adrain (2002).

It was assigned to Ptychagnostus by Westergård (1946); to Agnostida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Ptychagnostidae by Ergaliev and Ergaliev (2008) and Naimark and Pegel (2017).

E. B. Naimark and T. V. Pegel 2017Cephalon with median preglabellar furrow. Glabellar M1 and M2 of equal width (not widened across M1 or M2); M1 inflated; F2 developed. Basal lobes with tendency to elongate, but usually oval. Pygidium with F1 and F2 equally developed; posteroaxis of moderate width and height. Posteroaxial furrow well developed. Prosopon usually smooth.
